Still an original idea

Pascal avatar As soon as I started blogging (back in 2005), I decided that there was no reason why I should be the only one publishing things and that my computer should also automatically publish something. So I wrote an AppleScript thing so that regularly (about every hour or, lately, every day) it takes a screen shot (of whatever virtual desktop I was in), scales it (200px wide), queries Keychain for alseyn.net ftp password (thanks to some German guy to provide me with hints for the code, because that one wasn't easy) and sends the picture over to my website (and then displays a growl notification on the screen). There is also a mode where one can trigger the process manually, but I much prefer the automatic thing (even if the resulting pictures are in general not as interesting as those I would have chosen myself)

The current one (not at the time those lines are written, but at the time you read them) is

Over the past years, regularly the computer has checked for a wide area network connection and sent its pictures. Incidentally, I had two very nice ones (at least that I noticed). The first one (8th March 2006 -- The background on that one is Andrew Wiles, the British mathematician who proved Fermat's last theorem in the 90s) was taken just when I was using Expose and the second one (9th May 2007) the tab :-)

Anyway, the surprising thing is that after all that time I think that I am still the only one on the Internet doing that. Talking with few friends, turned out that they would be scared, if not deeply annoyed, if the same program was running on their computer (as if there would ever be something so much of a weirdness on their screen...). Maybe one day, somebody else will do the same :-)
