Postulates
( What he said was rubbish, but I understood how rubbish it was only years later... )
When I heard him say this I got interested and decided that, as I was too young to care about love (I was already 16, but I got interested in girls much later), that I would solve the Death problem. That day I decided that I was immortal and that I would live with the idea that I would live for ever.
So now, you could ask "How can you decide this ? ...if it's not true.". The point here is not whether it s true or not (of course I am not immortal, I mean not yet), the point was for me to believe in it, and this was all that mattered. Very quickly I noticed side effects of my decision (by the way, the technical term for such a decision is a "postulate" -- that when you decide that something is true). Every time I had something to do I did it quickly without delays, more exactly without postponing it. I could get much more done in one week than ever before in my life.
Now, you might thing "Hey wait a minute, he is now immortal, has got for ever to do things, and do them without delay ? Isn't that a bit strange ?"
Last summer, while talking to a friend, I fully understood what did happen: Humans know that they have a limited amount of time to live and therefore a limited amount of time to do things. On the other side they like relaxing, chilling out, hanging with friends, and more generally enjoy laziness. This creates a conflict, and our all life is a continuous struggle between doing things (above all the non enjoyable things, such as working, studying or cleaning the house) now versus doing then later. Having to choose between relaxing now or relaxing later we often choose to relax now. Same thing for having sex, eating food or seeing a movie. We behave like this because deep inside us we think that we should do them now in case we are just about to die. If we relax now that's taken. If we decide to relax tomorrow and we end up dying overnight, we would have spent out last day working or studying rather than relaxing (and maybe have sex or eat that nice food etc...) ; what a pity!
But, when you have an unlimited amount of time, you know that you will relax, because you cannot die between now and later. In fact relaxing after having cleaned the house is actually better than relaxing before. So when you have an unlimited amount of time, you do not have any time management conflict. You do things when it is time to do them, without wasting your own time wondering whether it would not be better to do them later....
The question I invite you to ask yourself now, is which postulate can you make, to make your life easier and make yourself happier, more successful or anything that matters to you. You can even try "from now on I am beautiful" because unless you are truly ugly, if you do think that you are beautiful, your behavior will change, you will probably become more confident and therefore more attractive... In general postulates work better if they affect the way that you think rather than the physical world. If you postulate that the Sun will die tomorrow, you might have a problem getting that one becoming true, because your will cannot bend the laws of the universe, but your will can easily change the way your mind works, and the side effects of mind reshaping can be very far reaching, even in the physical world (for instance you get that thing that you have always wanted to do, done).
